OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM NICOL
Mr. William Nicol, of Belmont, died suddenly in hospital today, at the age of 69. Although he had not been in good health, his death was unexpected. .
Born in Nelson, Mr. Nicol came to Wellington as a boy and for nearly; fifty years has been a well-known figure in the city, particularly in commercial and trade circles. He was a master painter and retained an interest in the painting trade up to the time of his death. -The Baptist Church numbered him amongst its most valuable helpers, and more than one of the suburban churches around Wellington owe him much for his practical assistance. In his earlier days Mr. Nicol was keenly interested in local body affairs. He was a member of the old Melrose Borough Council when it was merged with Wellington city, and for a time thereafter he was a city councillor.
The late Mr. Nicol's eldest son, Captain R. K. Nicol,- M.C., after.winning his decoration in France, was one of the few New Zealand officers chosen to lead the troops in Dunsterville's Mesopotamia force, and it was while on that duty that he was killed, near the Persian border. One other son, Mr. Harold Nicol, survives his father, and there are two daughters, Mrs. A. J. Grigg, of Remuera, and Mrs. G. Griffiths, of Christchurch. The late Mr. Nicol married a daughter of the. late Mr. Edward Petherick, the wellknown architect, and she also survives him. There are three brothers — Messrs. A. S. Nicol and John Nicol, both of Wellington, and. A. W. Nicol, of Christchurch.
