The profits tax "concessions" of the Chancellor of the Exchequer-met with a cool reception in ihe City, and as a result of their publication the markets opened quietly, most shares being lower. The City representative of the Australian Associated Press agency finds that members of the House of Commons who are representative of business and finance liave quickly come to the conclusion that the amended lax is little belter than the original, and one of the most sober and influential members declared lhat the Chancellor will be unwise to go on with the tax at all. A meeting of representatives of the shipbuilding industry has already expressed disappointment and has voiced the opinion that even the amended tax will act as a deterrent to enterprise. . • The..
