DUNNING'S BIG DAY
N.Z. CRICKET TOURISTS
MINOR COUNTY MATCH
(By the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Received May 25, 10 a.m.),! HANLEY, May 24. Wickets fell cheaply when the New Zealand touring cricket team commenced a two-day match against Staffordshire, a second-class county, to- ; day. Zealand made 119 and 9 for one wicket, and Staffordshire were dismissed for 68, Dunning taking eight wickets for 26 runs. The weather was dull in the morningiand the wicket soft. Play commenced at noon. The attendance was 500. ' . ' The teams are:— New Zealand.—T. C. Lowry, J. L. Kerr, W. A. Hadlee, G. L. Weir, M. W. Wallace, H.. G. Vivian, J. A. Dunning, M. P. Donnelly, J. K. Lamason, W. N. Carson, N. Gallichan. Staffordshire.—W. A. Adams, H. . Smith, A. B. Hollowood, Scorer, Bryan, J. T. Ikin, Edge, R. H.Plant, Wakelin, R. Lawton, R. Hollowood. The .sun shone put in the afternoon and made a soft, drying wicket which was ideal for the bowling of Wakelin and Lawton, two fast bowlers, causing the ball to rise. As a result New Zealand were dismissed for the smallest total so far on the tour. ■ .. Hadlee, Weir, and Wallace , alone "showed ability'to score. Hadlee hit .five, 4's with hard drives to cover and mid-off. . Weir was slow to start, but once he got going he was like his old self. He hit four 4's past point, and -gave one chance when his score was 15. ; WALLACE UNLUCKY. Wallace scored.most of his runs in the slips, and was unlucky when an uppish stroke returned the ball to the bowler. Lamason made a better beginning, but was beaten by the pace with which the ball came off the difficult wicket, as also was Lowry. Donnelly was unfortunate, as he was bat-, ting steadily when a fieldsman, leaping high, took a catch with one hand' on the leg side. ' The heavy outfield cut down many 4's. Dunning made the ball swerve, and turned .it, sometimes a foot. He was ably supported in the field by Vivian and Wallace. Details:— I
