ESPERANTO CLUB
The weekly meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club was held last night in the clubroom, Nathan's Building, Grey Street. Mr. Bertram Potts presided. .Greetings were received from the Hutt Valley Esperanto Club. Correspondence was received from England, ipain, Sweden, Yugoslavia, France, Brazil, Peru, and Japan. Outward correspondence included greetings sent to Esperanto clubs in Canada and Yugoslavia. A letter received from Mr. Edgar Hornblow, vice-president of the club, contained news of his further lectures in Esperanto in various European cities. Esperanto was making steady progress, particularly in official circles. He encountered Esperantists and Esperanto clubs in the most unexpected places ■ and was always . accorded 'a warm welcome. ■ His wife and he were thoroughly enjoying the trip, which would have been impossible without the assistance of Esperanto. ■The president announced that a copy had been received of the "Gazeto de Ameriko," printed in Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this publication, which was edited entirely in Esoeranto, was to 'furnish information for the world at large concerning the social life, culture, literature, etc., of. all parts of America. More and more scientific publications in. Europe were publishing resumes of their articles in Esperanto. Among these were "Le Phare Medicale de. Paris," "Le Journal de Medecine de Lyon," and "Le Bulletin de la- Societe d'Orthopedie de Bruxelles." Recently the "Lekarska Revue," appearing in Prague, had followed this example.. ' ■ ' ' At the end of the tuition period, a programme arranged by Mr. James Allan was presented. The opening number was an original Esperanto sketch by Mr. Allan entitled "La Fratino de la Diablo" ("The Sister of the. Devil"), in which Miss Florence Bennett, Mrs. A. Wells, and-Mr. Gordon Blong played the parts. "La Maljuna Viro" ("The Old Man") was an original sketch by Mr. Frank Bailey, which he presented in conjunction with Mr. L.. Cox. The concluding item was a short play "La Ruga Fadeno" ("The Red Thread"), translated into Esperanto by Mr. Allan and presented by Messrs. J. Thomas, James McKay, Anton Vogt, Vernon J. Leek, D.8.E.A., Cliff Toomer, and Allan. In the course of the evening anecdotes in Esperanto j were narrated by Mr. Allan and musical interludes were rendered by Mr. J. W. O'Neill. It was announced that next week the programme would be in the hands of Mr. P. McCrae.
