MAIN TRUNK LINE

DUPLICATION OF SECTION

Under the scheme of-duplication of the Main Trunk railway line between JFrankton Junction and Auckland, it will be necessary to alter the lay-out of some stations and in some instances to shift dr reconstruct station buildings (states the "New Zealand Herald"). ■ The stationmaster at Huntly Mr. J. S. Scoullar, has received advice that a new. railway station will be erected at Huntly to replace the present building, which was erected over 50 years ago. Work on the new building, "which, will be of wood, will start in about two months. Provision for an overhead traffic bridge at the Rayner's Road crossing has also been niade in the plans, and this will eliminate a source, of danger to motorists, as this crossing has been the scene of numerous accidents. Reconstruction of the station yard lay-out at Mercer is also mooted. This will involve shifting the station buildings. Some of the smaller flag stations on the line will be, shifted back, and at other stations the construction of island platforms with overbridges is involved. Many.plans are yet tentative, for the work of survey of the line under the construction scheme will take some considerable time. The progress of the duplication of the line is largely dependent on the capacity of the engineering and surveying staffs to deal with the various sections involved.
