POWER PROBLEM

\ OUTLYING DISTRICTS

MINISTER'S INVESTIGATION

No power is at present given to the Government to grant subsidies for electrical reticulation schemes'in outlying districts. Replying to a petition from residents of the-Eastern Bays of Banks Peninsula recently forwarded to him, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) said that the Government did not have the power to grant subsidies for this purpose, but he stated that he was at present reviewing the whole situation to see if some means could be devised to improve the method of distribution so that a supply might be made more readily available to settlers in outlying and backblock districts, reports the "Press." "I am at present looking into the whole situation to see if some means can be devised to improve the system of distribution so as to L make it even more generally available," said the Minister, "and so that large profits cannot be accumulated or transferred to other accounts in some places, while other places have to' go without. I recognise that the problem is not without several difficulties, but I feel hopeful that a solution can be found. Meanwhile, I regret that it is not possible to assist the, settlers concerned at present in the manner you desire."
