MR. J. D. ROCKEFELLER, SEN.

PEACEFUL PASSING

NO FINAL MESSAGE

United I'ress Association—Bj Electric Tfle- ( cr<iph--Cui>yplglit , (Received May 24, 9 a.m.) I NEW YORK, May 23. Mr. Jolm I>. Rockefeller, sen., the multi-millionaire philanthro- , pist, died at Daytona Beacli, Florida, after a scries of heart attacks, ; at the age of 07 years. [ The first indications of approaching death came early this morning, when Mr. Rockefeller fell into a coma from which he failed to rally. The family physician, Dr. H. L. Merryday, said that tbe first heart attack occurred on Friday. His condition had improved on Saturday and he was in excellent spirits and talked with his servants. Therefore his son was not called to the winter home. A change came at midnight on Saturday while he was talking in good spirits with his valet and his night nurse. , The valet said that death could not have been more peaceful or more beautiful.' He passed away as if he was asleep, and so quietly that one could not ask for a more beautiful death. The body will be taken to Tarrytowii, New York, whence it is expected it will be removed to Cleveland. His physician attributed his death to hardening of the heart muscles. "He had no final message, .and apparently did not realise he was dying," the doctor said. , . Several servants who had long been in his employ stood at the1 bedside weeping. ' The news spread throughout the city late this morning, and throngs of men^ and women gathered at the gates of v the estate. Mr. Rockefeller had been more active oil late than for several years and motored daily to an inlet twelve miles away, where he watched fishermen and the passage of shrimping boats. Otherwise his contact with the outer world was slight and he remained closely guarded on his estate.
