UNPLEASANT LEAVE

SOLDIERS IN MADRID

WANT TO RETURN TO FRONT

(Received May 24, 9.15 a.m.) MADRID, May 23. "We want a return of the comparative peace of the front line," declared troops on leave on their arrival in Madrid after several months in the trenches at Jarama, where there has been a stalemate. They expected to find amusement and good food in the capital, but encountered one of the heaviest bombardments for weeks, in which 100 persons were killed, while the food proved to be greatly inferior to that supplied to the troops.
