OBITUARY
MRS. W. PURVIS
The death occurred at Hastings yesterday afternoon of a very old resident, Mrs. William Purvis, who was in her j 92nd year. Mrs. Purvis was one of the very early children born in New Zealand, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bartlelt, living at Titani Bay at the time. They were there when the great earthquake occurred which altered the configuration of the Lower Hutt a good deal, and raised the Basin Reserve from a boat harbour to solid land. In later years Mrs. Purvis experienced the Napier-Hastings earthquake. She had memories of early troubles with the Maoris, and could remember when at Titahi having to hide in the bush after having taken the most treasured possessions out of the house and hidden them. The cottage was practically shaken to pieces in the earthquake. Mrs. Purvis leaves her husband and two daughters, Mrs. James Wilkinson, of Overtoun Terrace, and Mrs. W. E. Northe, of Napier, with whom much sympathy will be felt in their bereavement. There are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
