SERIES OF MISHAPS

'CHASE AT TIMARU

FINAL DAY IN RAIN

(Special to the "Evening Post") CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. The South Canterbury Jockey Club was out of luck for the second day of its Winter Meeting. Drizzling rain fell in the morning and continued at intervals most of the afternoon. There was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £13,811 10s. compared with £10,741 10s for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £23,408 10s. against £17,991 10s twelve months ago. GIGGLESWICK IMPROVES. Hunting Bag and Sunny Comet led out in the Pukaki Hurdles, Golden Lap, Cottingham, and Giggleswick following them out of the straight. Along the back Cottingham moved up, joining Hunting Bag and Last Link in the lead half a mile from home, with Giggleswick handy. Giggleswick joined Last Link at the last hurdle and went on to win by a length, and a half. Cottingham hung on to be third, with Poniard, finishing strongly, not far away and Sunny Comet heading the others. HIS SECOND WIN. Nolana, Double Gift, Peacock, and Gay Lyric led out in the Southburn Hack Handicap. Prince Flaneur soon moved up, joining Peacock and Gay Lyric in front after two furlongs, with Double Gift heading the others. Prince Flaneur and Gay Lyric retired at the entrance to the straight, where Aggravate and Paper Note moved up. Peacock held his place comfortably, to win by a length from Double Gift, who beat Aggravate by a neck. Paper Note was close up, with Nolana and Gay Lyric heading the others. SUSTENANCE SCORES. Bridget Brough and Glen Travis were the early leaders in the Wai-iti Trot Handicap, with Sustenance, Wagon Wheels, Anna Wong, Taruna, Janet Gaynor, and Bayard next after a furlong. There was no change in the order of the first three along the back, where Wynan was in the middle of.the field, with Francisco a long way back, with only one horse behind him. Sylvie's Best then moved up, taking charge from Bridget Brough and Taruna half a mile from home. Sustenance was still handy, and he ran to the front when the straight was reached. Wynan and Francisco then appeared, but Sustenance won by a length, Wynan beating Francisco by a neck. BACK TO HIS BEST. The EUoughton Handicap showed Wino at his best. Trivet, Queen Dorothy, and Fiord were the worst offenders in delaying the start, the last-named pair and Rebel Lad going off badly. Araboa was smartest out, followed by Wino, Royal Gallant, Rebel Chief, Daring Deed, and Epris. After a furlong Daring Deed and Royal Gallant lost their places, while, a little further onRebel Lad and Queen Dorothy moved up, being in the bunch behind Araboa at the home turn. Wino took charge when the straight was reached, going on to win decisively by a length. Royal Gallant, finishing strongly, beat Araboa by half a length, with Rebel Chief half a length away fourth. DISASTROUS STEEPLECHASE. Of eleven starters, only three got round in the Pareora Steeplechase without mishap. Polydora crashed through the wing in trying to run off at the first fence, while Elg'indale fell at the next fence, the first of the stand double. Hunting Go and Nocturnus were the early leaders, Streamline soon joining them. Snowy Dawn was next, and he joined in with the front lot a round from home. Sunward fell at the second of the stand double. Going to the back, seven furlongs from home. Streamline and Snowy Dawn were well clear of" Hunting Go and Nocturnus. with High Speed, Bonny Buff, and Santoft next, Joppa being a long way back. Streamline ran off at the sod wall, five furlongs from home. Hunting Go then ran up to Snowy Dawn, who ran off at the last fence, Bonny Buff and High Speed following suit, while Joppa, a long way back, fell. Nocturnus put in a strong run, but Hunting Go beat him by half a length. Santoft was two lengths away. STABLEMATES IN MONEY. The Temuka Hack Handicap was a good race. Forum and Dark Rose were slow to move. Almira and Salient Knight were smartest out, but Silver Slipper soon ran past him, with Lochain also handy and Balmenter next. Cape Gabo moved up when half the journey had been covered, and he v/as alongside Salient Knight and Lochain at the entrance to the straight, Silver Slipper still being in front, while Balmenter and Dropped Catch were closing up. Cape Gabo finished strongly, gradually overhauling his stablemate, Silver Slipper, whom he beat by half a length. Balmenter was a length away, with another length to Dropped Catch, who cut Salient Knight out of fourth place on the post. 810 DIVIDEND. The Winchester Trot Handicap was a surprise, so far as backers were concerned, as they neglected the first day's winner, Heather Queen, allowing her to pay a wonderful .dividend. Stylish Boy led for two furlongs, and then was headed by Big Nelson, with Andy Watson, Mandrell, Dusky Sound, and Adverse heading the next bunch. Heather Queen then started to move up. After being fourth half a mile from home, where Fine Art joined in. Heather Queen led to the straight and won easily, while Fine Art outstayed Dusky Sound for second. GREY HONOUR REPEATS. Five scratchings left only six to start in the Farewell Handicap, the smallest field of the meeting, but they staged a great contest. Invoice was first out, Double Gift soon joining .him, with Grey Honour handy, to be joined by Silver Lark at the end of three furlongs. Invoice seemed to have a slight advantage a furlong from the post, but in a good finish Grey Honour stayed on to win by half a length from Silver Lark, who got up to beat Invoice by a neck, while Double Gift was a length further back.
