BLAZE OF LIGHT

FLEET DECORATIONS

SEARCHLIGHTS & FIREWORKS

LONDON, May 21,

Standing on the quarter-deck of the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert, the King saw 300 warships simultaneously transformed into palaces of dazzling light last night. The signal for the lighting up was given by the launching of a bouquet of red and white rockets from the Royal yacht at 10 p.m. Immediately every ship switched on its lights, bathing the waters, in a golden haze. The biggest crowd in the history of Portsmouth, estimated to exceed 1,000,000 people, watched the spectacle from the shingle, and saw searchlights weaving intricate silver patterns in the sky. The star-shells, rockets, and roman candles burst in fiery splendour. The iluminations ended at midnight.
