ANOTHER STEEPLES
MANAWATU'S WINTER CARD
- The unexpected, opportunity of a run over the country prior to the Wellington Winter Meeting is. afforded by the incorporation of, an open steeplechase in the programme for the Manawatu Racing Club's Winter Meeting, which will be held this year on July 3, the Saturday before the opening of the Wellington Meeting. In past years Manawatu has always followed Wellington right at the close of the season. ■ The Awapuni Steeplechase will be contested over 2J miles and it will carry a stake of £250. The country at Awapuni is not difficult and undoubtedly - many owners will avail themselves of this chance of winning a worth-while prize. The Wellington Meeting opens three days later lon the following Tuesday. * The , general programme for the Manawatu Meeting is similar to last year's, except that all stakes are substantially increased and the Awapuni Steeplechase replaces the maiden flat event. There will be two steeplechases oni the card, as the Manawatu Hunt Cup, also over 2J miles, half a mile further than in the past, will precede the Awapuni Steeples; and, there is also an open hurdles, run over 13 miles. The distance of the final hack event has been increased from 9 fur T longs to IJ miles. There are two open flat events, over li miles and 7 r furlongs respectively, a hack six furlongs, and a gentlemen, riders' race, completing .the schedule of eight races. In all, it is the most attractive- winter, programme yet offered by the. Manawatu Club. ■ ■ ■" .-■■'.
