Directions are given for a baby's outfit, for winter wear, consisting of a double-breasted coat, cap, and gloves. Abbreviations: X.. knit; p., purl; st.st., stocking stitch; w.fd., wool forward; dec, decrease; inc., increase; tog., together; sts., stitches;

THE COAT.

Meaurements.—From shoulder at neck edge, 16in. All round under-arms, when fastened up, 22in, length of sleeve seam, including turned-back cuff, lOJin. „ Materials.—4-ply "Bairns-wear wool. No. 10 knitting needles. No. 12 crochet hook. 6 pearl buttons, larger than a shilling. ■ . Back.—Cast on 140 sts.; them work into back of sts. for first row. Ist row: P. 1, k. 5, * p. 2, k. 5. Make 2 more buttonholes in same way on every 21st and 22nd row following, until there are 3 sets in 'all, but at same time, when side edge is same depth to armhole as on back, shape armhole by dec. 1 st. on each side edge, on next 7 k. rows, leaving 56 sts. Continue without dec. until sleeve seam measures Bin (finishing after a k. I row) change to> pattern and reverse work for cuff as follows:—lst row: • k. 5, p. 2. Rep. from * to end. 2nd row: * k. 2, p. 5. Rep. from * to end. Rep. these 2 rows until cuff measures -2Jin, then cast off.
