NAVAL BALL

CHRISTCHURCH ENTERTAINS

The ball given by the Navy League in honour of Rear-Admiral. R. H. O. Lane-Poole, commanding H.M., Australian Squadron, and officers of H.M.A.S.Canberra and H.M.A.S. Sydney, both of which ships are in Lyttelton at present, was a memorable occasion, states the "Star-Sun." Beautifully-gowned women were quite outshone at this distinguished gathering by the Navy, Army, and Air Force officers in their gallant uniforms. Gold braid and medals on naval coats were a foil for the brilliant scarlet worn by Canterbury, Yeomanry Cavalry officers at present in camp, while Air .Force grey was worn by several male guests.

Much dinner entertaining both at port and in town had been done before the dance. Rear-Admiral Lane-Poole gave a dinner, in his flagship, the Canberra, and many other officers, both of the Canberra and Sydney, were also entertaining guests. . . :

Visiting polo players from Cambridge and Pareora and many local enthusiasts, in the sport were the guests of Major and Mrs.. George Hutton, who gave a champagne dinner, served buffet fashion, for between thirty and. forty guests at .their town house, Htirlingham, Deans .Avenue. Mrs. Ernest Edridge, of Merivale, was another dinner hostess,, her guests including Commander J. Burnett and Commander H. A. . Showers, of H.M.A.S. Canberra, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beadel, Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Hewlett, Mr. and Mrs. George Simpson, and Miss Patricia Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs. Lan Cromb. . ' -

The Winter Garden,was a:bowerof flowers for the dance. A continuous buffet. supper was served in a large marquee, and an oyster bar also had many patrons. Music was supplied by the Bailey-Marston orchestra. This and many other splendid arrangements for the dance had been made by. a large and enterprising committee.
