VETERANS' GRAVES
■Arrangements to have adequate at-tention-given to veterans' graves in Symonds Street Cemetery will be made by the Auckland City Council, if the Department of Internal Affairs contributes £100 (states the "New Zealand Herald"). The question was raised by the honorary inspector of graves to the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, who asked if the council' had decided on any action in connection with veterans', graves in the cemetery. The superintendent of parks reported that ..action was taken by the council some years ago, and a promise was given that some attention would be given them when funds were available. Beyond keeping the graves free from weeds and other matter, however, the council had no responsibility in connection with,the upkeep of headstones. Such graves as those Of Captain William Hobson,and the late Mr. E. Costley and Judge Maning were cleaned annually by the cemetery employees, as a matter of sentiment. The Undersecretary to the Department of Internal Affairs asked if the council would have the work done for a grant of £100, the estimated cost of the necessary renovation 3.
