AMERICAN VIEWS
The view that Australia this' year has a second-to-none chance of winning the Davis Cup,is shared by many prominent American critics. The editor of "American Lawn Tennis," in a leading article,'asserts that the'only twocountries in the running are Australia and America, and leans slightly, towards Australia. He : reasons that America is a one-man team, whereas Australia has three first-rate singles players and several strong doubles combinations.-. ■
Budge, he says, is the best amateur in the world at present, but cannot be expected to win two singles and a doubles..; He regards Quist as, America's greatest danger, and even admits the possibility that the South Australian will beat Budge. "His game is so sound and well rounded, so lacking in,the pyrotechnical that he is in constant danger of' being held a little toa lightly. He is capable of beating almost anyone on his day, which is day in and day out. He was not at his best at Wimbledon, but in the' Davis Cup challenge tie he gave^ Perry many anxious moments, and carried the issue to the fifth set," he says.
Speaking of the coming tie between America.and Australia, the' Writer says: "The Australians will almost certainly be ias strong and perhaps a little stronger than they were. Quist in particular can reasonably be expected to be better, and that means very good indeed. Crawford is an indeterminate quality. Back of" him and Quist it McGrath, who can always render aa excellent account of himself."
America's weakness, the writer say«, ,is in the second singles string.' He cites Grant, Parker, and Hunt as possible players, but gives none of them a chance of taking a point''from Australia.
