Undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects of 1936 'was -: Ray Allen, / who impressed all who. saw him in action when he won the junior welterweight title. ;
Allen, who is only sixteen years old, is a Gisborne product.' He is a son of Constable: F. G. Allen, of Wellington, and a grandson of Mr. F. G, Allen, a ' well-known sportsman of Poverty Bay and a ■ popular hotelkeeper. v " At twelve years 'of age: Ray Allen distinguished himself by defeating- a much older and heavier lad in' a wrestling contest at a sports meeting in Gisborne. He started boxing last year, and, iri;; the first six months of his career, he had eight fights for seven wins and a■. narrowt, loss on points. In winning the junior •welterweight title he had his revenge for his only: defeat by stopping his, victor .in. the, second round' of the final.
