HIS MISSION FULFILLED
Wild Chase fulfilled his mission in adding the Awapuni Cup to his fine list of three-year-old successes this season, and now it is probable he will en;joy some months of leisure before being required 'to start on a preparation for his next racing. He was all out over the last furlong yesterday, but he was never really in any serious danger .of defeat. -Afterwards he was decorated with the special ribbon by Mrs. C. Louisson, wife of the club's president. A slow pace did not altogether, suit Wild Chase. Sticking to the rail, he was running second to Hazoor after a quarter of a mile. The field closed along the back, and then at the halfmile Wild Chase drew level with the leader. Kather than risk going out wide on the turn the three-year-old dropped back a little, but he easily slipped to the van in the straight and then frustrated all efforts of the others to pull'him back by a length and a Wild Chase is the sixth three-year-old to win the Awapuni Cup in 24 contests, and he is the sixth South Islander successfully to make the trip north for the race in the last seven years, a period • during which the only North Island winner has been Autopay, four years ago. He is the second Paper Money horse to have succeeded, and he is the third winner for A. E. Ellis, who also won on Vertigern arid. Nightmarch (in his second victory). Considering the speed' of the track the time of 2min lOsec was slow. The first half-mile took 53 4-ssec, while Hazoor- was setting the rate, but they came home the last half-mile in .50 3-5 sec, with the pace hard on mainly over the last furlong and a half. The" race record .'is 2min 4 3-ssec, made ,by Sasanof back in 1919.
There was not a great deal separating Catalogue, Arctic King, and Hazoor. Catalogue, coming on the inner of Arctic King, finished best of them and was second by a neck, with Arctic King depriving Hazo6r of third: prize by a head. Entail, the only other runner, was some lengths away. :
' '."Wild Chase, was backed down to so short a price that all the others were paying much better money for second place. : " . ■ ':.'.
