More favourable weather could hardly have been desired for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting ■at Awapuni yesterday. It was a perfect mild forenoon, with very little wind, anc} though later light clouds drifted across the sun, the day remained one for most enjoyable racing. An excellent attendance for an off day was attracted to the picturesque course, and the totalisator turnover of £17,778 10s was an increase of £7533 10s on the £10,225 handled on the corresponding day last year, when the meeting was held in -between Wellington and the Easter gatherings. ' ■ Fine fields were paraded in all events, and as Awapuni in the autumn is always a very popular fixture with owners and trainers, it was a most successful day from every aspect. The Prince of Wales Handicap, won deservedly by Big Dook, who stripped a picture of fitness, was a splendid contest from start to finish; and though the Awapuni Cup was not so spectacular a race, it at least ■. gave a satisfactory result when Wild Chase emerged a comfortable 1 winner. • ■ s
