WONDERFUL PICTURES
ACADEMY PRIVATE VIEW
There are signs of the1 Wellington Academy of Arts being a most popular place, for there was a general expression of enjoyment and satisfaction to be seen among v the crowds of guests who were present last night and who had the great pleasure of a "private view1; of the pictures of New Zealand scenery* painted by Mr. S. J. Lamorna Birch in his tour, through 'his country. The expressions of pleasure at the stately beauty and comfort of the gallery were only second to those of appreciation of the beautiful' pictures exhibited. ' , • There was a very large attendance of many of Wellington's best-known people, and with', such wonderful adornment of -the .walls was added the "moving picture" of charming frocks in all tones of artistic colouring, making a delightful-ensemble. , Mr. Lamorna Birch was accompanied by Mrs. Birch, who wore'a frock of green and ■'cream toned checked ottoman silk, a 'fichu of deep ivory rose
i point lace, and a, girdle 'of; green velvet. \ A' beautiful emerald; brooch, and necklet were also worn.' Mrs. D. A. Ewen was in a handsome frock of silver striped tissue, and carried, a pink velvet wrap with touches' of -black. Mrs. i Murary Fuller, was in ,a; graceful trained frock of ...black satin with, a cluster of red -.roses, on the .corsage.
. Mr^" D. A: Ewe'n. (president)' "declared the exhibition -open, and Mr..- Lamornaj Birch made ari interesting reply.: After thelguests r.had had an opportunity of seeing :"sornething; i 'bf the pictures; supper wSs;;served;iri*;the: tearoom, where zinnias,'tastefully arranged, made the tables ibright'and:; attractive.:;;, -Quite a number i of,/tlie'v''wise 6nes"iiwaited till supper was .'served, and; then took the opportunity;'pftseeirig-;,the>pictures to more advantage than: could ;be secured whenfsb^'m'any -were 'present iri.; '"the gallery^'i :^ : :Jt} K':=■>'''■';■■'■:'.;.i--5:;:?-':^:': \
