The school in the early days was known as St. John's School, and for many years was the only infant school in the Dominion. Even now pupils are only taken up to Standard 111, but recently it was decided to extend it to Standard IV children. The school has had only three teachers in its fifty-two years' existence. Mrs. Eliza Brown was the first teacher and occupied that post for eighteen years. Mrs. Brown was at one time a teacher at Te Aro School, Willis Street.
