SWIMMING

WELLINGTON CENTRE

NORTH ISLAND TITLES

. Ay tentative programme and conditions for the proposed North Island swimming championships were received from the Hawke's. Bay Centre of theiiNew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association by the Wellington Centre at its meeting last night. The Hawke's Bay body asked for immediate action, and stated that such a meeting would fill, a long-felt want. The "programme provides for mens 50 yards, 100 yards, 440 yards, 100 yards backstroke, and 200 yards breaststroke, and-women's 50 yards, 100 yards, 220 yards, 100 yards backstroke, and 220 yards breaststroke championships.-The meeting would preferably be a oneday fixture, and .would, be held yearly, after the New Zealand title meeting .for preference. The Hawke's Bay Centre suggested that 'the first contests should be , held this year in Napier. ' ' The opinion of the meeting was that the time of the year was too late for anything1 to be done this season, and ■that-the" proposed- titles would serve no.useful purpose. . A motion to this effect-was carried.

I Permission was given to the Wellington' Club to hold its carnival at the TehAro Baths on Saturday, March 13." •The following - scratch events are to be.held:—Maxwell Trophies, Coltmari'arid Duthie Cups, 100 yards second-ary-schoolboy and schoolgirl championships;-.- Swimmers' Memorial Cup, 200 yards ."house" relay, 50 yards free-style championship, and Walker and Hall flying squadron.

The failure of some swimmers entering for events at carnivals to appear .when the event was called was the subject of some discussion. It wa? stated that at a recent carnival there were 31-starters in a race out of an entry of 67. The matter was held over for further investigation.

Mr. A. A. Jenkins was appointed delegate to the centre by the Featherston Club.

On the motion of Mr.-N. Oldershaw, the secretary, it was decided to ask the New Zealand. Council to convene a meeting--of delegates of the various centres to be held in Wellington at a convenient date this season with the object of considering a revision of the rules.
