' .Friesland, a hot favourite, duly won the Opunake Cup on Saturday, but he had to be ridden out to prevail over. Tahurangi' by .a length''and a half.
A good start saw Tahurangi and .Windsoreen lead past the stand at a slow pace. Windsoreen was in charge going out of the straight from Mustang, Davistock, and Friesland, the first three furlongs occupying 45sec. Tahurangi moved up at the half-mile, and followed Friesland into the straight, but though he .pressed the favourite hard, he could not break down his resistance. Corowa came well over the final'two furlongs for third, and Davistock was -fourth. The last half-mile was covered in 52 3-ssec.
