Baffles is a half-brother by Blandford to the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby winner Manna and three-quarter-brother to Sandwich; winner of the St.. Leger. Waffles, the dam of Baffles, is one of England's greatest brood1 mares. She also produced Parwiz, winner of the Gratwicke Stakes, and her progeny collectively'have won stakes amounting to £45,326. She was by that great brood-mare sire Buckwheat, who was by Martian's ■ sire Martagon from Sesame, by St. Simon. Her dam. Lady Mischief, was by St. Simon, ■ and this close breeding to St. Simon made her an admirable mate for Blandford, who showed a definite afr finity for marcs of St. Simon breeding. It is worthy of note that Trigo, winner of the Derby and £27,102, Athford, winner of the Doncaster Cup and £7947, Harinero and Primero, both recent winners of the Irish Derby and St. Leger, were all by Blandford from a mare with a double cross of St. Simon and hailing from the very, successful No. 22 family, like Baffles. This family produced one of. St. Simon's greatest sons in St. Frusqiiin, winner, of £32,965, and whose brother San Francisco was a splendid success in New Zealand. Others of this line to win repute were Your Majesty, winner of the St. Leger, Eclipse Stakes, etc., Cylgad (sire of the- dams of Heroic and Cylinder), Captain Cuttle, winner of the Derby, Mr. Jinks, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, and Parth, winner of over £22,000. Mr. G. M. Curries famous mare Eulogy, from the same family, has established one of the most successful winning lines in the Stud Book.
Manna, Baffles's half-brother, has been an outstanding success at the stud in England, where he is fully booked at 400 guineas. His sons, Colombo, unbeaten at two years and winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, and Miracle, also unbeaten at two years, and winner of the Eclipse Stakes, arc both fully booked; and his daughter Archidamia • was the test three-year-old in Italy in 1936, winning the Italian Derby, One' Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas, and Oaks, etc. Baffles's three-quarter-brother Sandwich has been fully, booked since 1933 at 148 soys.
