MINER'S CALLING

EMPHASISING PERILS

DAY OF MOURNING IN

BRITAIN

CLOSING OF PITS iX'nltcii Press Association—l!y Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 10. Urging that "work in coalfields throughout the country be stopped on August 13 to permit miners to observe a national day of mourning for victims of the Barnsley disaster, Mr. Joseph Jones, president of the Mine Workers' Federation, has issued a manifesto to all branches. The plan is proposed as a "mark of respect for our fellow-workmen and as a means of directing the attention of the nation to the increasing perils of our calling." The Northumberland and Durham miners have rejected proposals to close the pits as a memorial. The death-roll in the disaster is now 58. The King has sent £100 for the Wharnecliffe Miners' Fund.
