A RANK OUTSIDER

HAVERING IN HURDLES

The Trial Hurdles saw that onetime good flat performer Havering, rank outsider of the field and at over a score straight out, illustrate the rule that a horse who has shown class can be dropped quickly in the weights only at considerable risk. -At the recent Wellington Meeting he had 10.4, but his weight yesterday was only 9.1, while Salt Spray had lib more than he had in winning that event at Trentham.

Those who had witnessed Havering's efforts as a hurdler at Trentham might reasonably have considered that the chestnut was a back-number. But at the South Canterbury Hunt Meeting subsequently he finished second, and yesterday he disclosed that racing; has been successful in bringing him-back to form. Jumping well, he was first out, settled down after the second fence in. behind The Smuggler and Redolent, then took charge again between the last two fences and came on to win easily by three lengths from the bracketed pair, Salt Spray and Santoft. Two years ago Havering showed some promise when tried at the role in the north He was later acquired by fiv tHon- R?• Webb arid this was his first success in the South Island.
