SIR BRUCE HAMILTON

General Sir Bruce Meade Hamilton, who had a distinguished military career before the World War, died at Wendover on July 6, says the "New York Times," He was 78 years old. Sir Bruce commanded an army in 1914, and in 1915 was in charge of a training centre. From 1916 to the end of the war he commanded a Home Defence Army. In his' more active career he had served with distinction in-the Afghan and Transvaal' campaigns of 1880 and 1881 and in subsequent expeditions in South Africa, including the Boer War. He was cited for bravery a dozen times. The Grand Cross of the Bath was conferred on him in 1915. Four years previously he had been made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, and, in 1902, a Knight Commander of the Bath. His father was Lieut-General Henry Meade Hamilton. Commissioned a lieutenant in the East Yorks Regiment in 1877, he was promoted through the grades until he became a colonel in 1897, a major general in 1900, lieutenant general in 1907 and general in 1913. While serving in Burma in 1885, Sir Bruce was decorated for heroism at the capture of Mandalay. He was at Ashanti in 1895, Benin in 1897, and then commanded the Niger Coast Protectorate Force for a time. In 1901 and 1902 he commanded groups of mounted troops in Orange River Colony, Cape Co.lony, ZuJuland, and the Eastern Transvaal. From 1904 to 1907 he commanded the Second Division of the First Army Corps, and from 1909 to 1913 the Scottish Command.
