LOWER HUTT
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. •. \
Mr. A. Grierson was appointed to the electing committee to elect a member to represent the Hutt Valley, local bodies on the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical.College. Mr. Grierson was also nominated as a candidate to represent the local bodies.
Pending an investigation into taxicar control by the Minister of Transport, the council decided to withhold action regarding fixing of fares, etc., which had been requested by taxi-car owners. ■■ . ■■
Prosecution of car owners for parking in a prohibited area in Laing's Road was authorised.
The Horticutlural Society was granted a licence for the current year, on condition that no pass-out checks were issued, or re-entry allowed, at any dances held-in the hall.
On. account of properties reverting to the Crown, rates to the amount of £1553 18s 5d were written off, and for other reasons £3048 6s 2d was written off.
The payment of £85 6s 3d was authorised as Lower Hutt's contribution to the Hutt Park rates.
The Mayor reported that Mr. R. Mitchell had accepted an offer of £300 for land needed to extend Queen's Road. .
It was decided to ask the permission of the Highways Board to expend petrol tax funds on Waiwhetu Road.
Councillor P. Dowse stated that in many streets the' manhole covers were above street level and requested the engineer to report on the question.
Councillor Ashton said he hoped the bylaws committee would take action to prosecute owners of land on which noxious weeds were growing. The engineer reported that during July 40,060,000 gallons of water had been, pumped at the main pumping station, compared with about 27,000,000 gallons the previous July. The building inspector reported that 50 houses were at present under construction in Lower Hutt.
Councillor Hall requested the reforming of West Street, and urged that more attention should be paid to Connolley Street. The Mayor said that no money had been placed on the estimates for either of the works.
In reply to Councillor Dowse, the Mayor said that the question of the bad condition of Gracefield Road caused by the shifting of spoil had been taken up with the Public Works Department, which was responsible. Councillor Hall failed to find any support .for a proposal to co-operate with the Government in the provision of houses, the Mayor remarking that the previous experience of the borough had .'hot been encouraging.
