HEAVY EAST COAST COUNTRY.— The difficulties which < both rail and road must surmount in traversing the stretch .of country between Napier and Gisborne are illustrated in the above picture. It shows the Maungaturango Viaduct in the centre over a practically dry watercourse, such as is usually treated by culverting and filling. In this case it. would have been a herculean work. In the background row after row of hills are seen stretching into the distance, each offering its separate problem in making roads and railways.
