PETONE AND MARIST
Playing in a strong and deceptive cross-wind, which broke up many attempts at passing movements, Petone proved their superiority over Marist on the Petone ground on Saturday. Petone's advantage lay in their possession of forwards who could play the ball in the wind with some combination. Though Marist had about as many opportunities, their shots would not fly true, but several of their attempts deserved a better fate.
The teams were as follows: —
Petone.—Body; Connell, Haines; J. White, Graham, Smith; Tromley, Patterson, Leslie, Cullen, Craig.
Marist.—Turkington; Laracy, Duffy; Hindle, Foley', T. Quirke; R. Quirke, Leonard, Traynor, M. Quirke, Vaney.
Marist played a man short for the first ten minutes or so, and, though the wind was partially against them, Petone kept up a steady pressure. Turkington was prominent in the opening stages. Then Marist took a turn, and were unfortunate -not to register. Leslie was showing fine control of the ball, and gave Marist all they could manage to hold the advantage. At last, they managed to open up the game with a smart attack, and M. Quirke scored neatly from close in. Petone slowly worked upfield, and from Leslie's opening Cullen sent in a low drive to equalise. Soon after, Leslie took the ball through himself, and found the net with a clean, powerful'shot.
A prolonged attack by Petone lasted fruitlessly through half the second spell. Turkington put in some really fine play, and held the blue men out until Cullen found the top corner of the net with a tricky backward shot. The game ended with the score: Petone 3, Marist 1
