.fa a fast and open game, in which the Hutt backs were the dominating attacking force, Hutt defeated Johnsonville by 12 points to 8, on the Hutt Recreation Ground. The teams were:— Johnsonville.—M. Kenny; Kellv. Welsh, Weise; Helliwell, Chancy; Burns; Lee, Hunter, Hall, A. Kenny, Grant. Bowler, Nossiter, and Trenchard.
Hutt.^Jarman; eNes, Hansen, Philr lips; Manders, Sargisson; Zane; Foster, Potter. Corkin; Andrews, Barry. Eookes; Devine, and Mclntosh. Hutt played with the strong northerly wind and made good use of it in Ihe first half with long kicks and ageressive back movements • that kept Johnsonville on the defensive for some time. After several back attacks. Nees went over in the corner. Jarman missed. Jarman, helped by the wind, was playing well up-field and took <sart in several attacking movements. and was unlucky not to get over. From a Hutt forward attack, Kenny saved, but Hansen came back. Jarman fielded, a kick and ran 40 yards befor*» being brought down. Johnsonville were offside in the ensuing play and Jarman kicked a good penalty. The Jphnsonville forwards were prominent in several loose attacking movements that looked promising, and Chancy gained considerable ground in one run, but neither Johnsonville forwards nor backs could break through. Hutt retaliated, and Zane sent the ball
out to his backs for Manders to cut in and score. The kick missed, and half-time went with the score: Hutt 9. JohnsonvUle 0.- ::,'.•-■. . . :
Both packs of forwards fought many hard battles in the second spell, and Jqhnsonville, with the help of. the wind, frequently had Hutt defending hard. Soon after the kick-off, a penalty kick by Kenny, went under the bar, Sargisson - mishandled, and from the resulting scrum Burns dived over. He also converted. Play ranged up and down the field with a territorial advantage to Johnsonville until Andrews led a fine dribbling rush to the Johnsonville line, and from a scrum,' scored a try. The kick failed. JohnsonyiUe were soon attacking hard and in a fast forward rush Hutt were lucky not to/ have an obstruction try allowed against them. In one movement Hansen and Nees broke through but Chajiey saved. Play swung back to half-way and from a scrum Helliwell went over. The kick failed and the game ended: Hutt 12, Johnsonville
