The Motor Registration branch of the Post Office, having completed the national figures relating to renewal of motor-vehicle licences as at June 30, announces that the grand total of vehicle licences (excluding dealers' licences) was 187,582. This represents an increase'over the 1935 registrations of- 20,508, or 12.27 per cent.

This substantial advance has been almost equally shared between motorcars and commercial vehicles, the increase in the former having been 15,347, or 13.33 per cent., and in the case of commercial vehicles 4915, 12.33 per cent. Motor-cycles increased in number by 246 (1.79 per cent).

The following are details from all registration districts of motor vehicles licensed as at June 30, compared with the totals of the same date last year:—

In addition tothe above, there were 8279 registrations of other vehicles, and 13,944 registrations of motor-cycles.

New Zealand now has a motor vehicle for approximately every six persons in its population, a figure only exceeded by the United States, with a motor vehicle for every 4.9 qf population. The latest available figures show that the Canadian proportion is the same as that of New Zealand, and that Australia has a motor vehicle for every 11 persons residing in the Commonwealth.
