IMPORTANT PROMOTIONS

The Admiralty announced recently; that in accordance with the King's wish Admiral Sir John Kelly, Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth, has been selected for' special promotion :to Admiral of the Fleet, "in recognition of his distinguished services. , '' ■'' •■;;■;'. This, promotion will be dated' July, 12, and will be an addition to the authorised number of Admirals of the Fleet on the active list. Had he not received this special promotion, Sir John Kelly would have been placed on the retired list, when he reaches the «ge limit of 65. Admiral Sir William Fisher is re. lieving him in the Portsmouth Command on the date named. During his tenure of command Sir John Kelly received visits from King George on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee review last year, and King Edward, then Prince of Wales, on June 30. In consequence of Sir John's promotion Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Evans, Commander-in-Chief at the Nore, better known as "Evans of the Broke." becomes an admiral, and Rear-Admiral N. F. Laurence, in command of Aircraft Carriers, is - advanced to viceadmiral. Both these distinguished flag officers received their first sea training in the mercantile marine cadet ship Worcester, at Greenhithe. Vice-Admiral E. R. G. R. Evans, who is 55, was with Captain Scott on his last Antarctic expedition. He earned his title "E.vans of the Broke"' ,in 1917, when: his Ehip.JtM.S.ißroke, and the destroyer Swift defeated =six German destroyers off Dover, afterone of the fiercest sea battles in history. Captain (Commodore second class* the Hon. Edmund R. Drummond, M.VJO, A.D.C.,, R.N., is promoted to Rear-ad-miral (July 19). The rank will be borne supernumerary to the list of flag officers, while he, is holding his present appointment vmder the New Zealand Government. ■ -. £
