LABOUR BUDGET
THE DEBATE OPENED
MR. COATES OPENS FIRE
PRIME MINISTER'S DEFENCE
The debate on the first Budget of the Labour Government was openedJin the House of Representatives last night. There were only two speakers— the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (National, Kaipara), who launched the attack on behalf of the Opposition, and the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), who replied to the points raised, by Mr. Coates. Mr. Coates was strongly critical of the financial proposals of the Government, and in the course of over an hour's speech he dealt trenchantly with various aspects of the Budget proposals. In. his reference to guaranteed prices he alleged that -the; Government had taken twopence a pound out of the pockets of the dairy farmers. Mr. Savage vigorously: defended the Budget proposals, and maintained that the Government had honoured the pledges it had made to'the people during the election campaign.
