AUSTRALIAN RACING

BIG CAULFIELD STEEPLES

The jumping session in Victoria will be concluded tomorrow with the final day of the V.A.T.C. Australian Steeplechase Meeting at Caulfield, when the principal item will be the Australian Steeplechase. Like the Australian Hurdles, the Australian Steeplechase is a race that a New Zealand horse has yet to.win, and the- only runner with a Dominion interest in tomorrow's contest is Actaeon, an eight-year-old son of Hunting Song who was taken to Australia some years ago by Mr. W. R. Kemball but who now races in different interests..

The acceptors for tomorrow number a dozen, and they include the winner of the recent V.R.C. Grand National Steeples, Santa Casa, though neither of the place-fillers in the Flemington evertt, Draconic or -Woodlace. Santa Casa subsequently won the Godfrey Watson Steeples at Caulfield, and he is the ruling favourite for the Australian Steeple's.

Xmas Gift and Actaeon, others in tomorrow's field, ran second and third in the Godfrey Watson, and Xmas Gift was second again to Philax (not in the Australian) in the Lindsay Gordon Steeples a fortnight ago at Moonee Valley. Xmas Gift is among the middle favourites for tomorrow's race, \arid better-fancied candidates are Cold Spring, recently coupled for fairly large stakes with Pooley Bridge (winner of las,t Saturday's Australian Hurdles), and Eldamaroyal . (who lost his rider in the Grand National), Strobus, Character (second to Fulham last year), and David's Legacy (who was third in the Lindsay Gordon recently and has been linked in a number of doubles). ■
