ISLAND BAY WORKS

DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS

ITEMS FOR LOAN SCHEDULES

Propo>als for further development works in the Island Bay district were discussed by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop; and the chairman of the works committee, Councillor W. Appletori, at the. annual meeting of the Municipal Electors' Association last evening. Mr. B. O'Brien, president of the associa-' tion, was in the chair. '.'. Mr. Hislop congratulated the association and'the residents of the bay on I their enterprise and thanked them for. ftheir co-operation with the City Council. During the past financial year, said Mr. Hislop, £8400 had been spent upon various works in the district. There v were still many avenues of development, but it was all a question of the best use of the funds available to' the council, having regard to the requirements of the whole city. ; Councillor Appleton also expressed, appreciation of the assistance given by the association, which had always b.een ■most helpful to the council and the .works, committee.. Most of the work carried out in the district recently had been in the nature of maintenance, but Island Bay was fortunate i;i, being more fully developed than many of the other outlying: districts ' which had. amalgamated with-the city at a later date. The only possible means of having' large development- arid improvement works carried out, in the district was for such works to be included in the loan schedule to be placed before ratepayers : shortly,' for it would be impossible for them' to be undertaken from revenue. The items fort the Island Bay district proposed for inclusion in the schedule were the extension of the Melrose reservoir, a supplementary watermain, and improvements to Avon Street and Melbourne; Road. The works at present in hand were the general reconstruction of Eden Street, the pavement of footpaths .in Murray Street and Dee Street, a general cleaning-up of "zigzag" footpaths, and the Island Bay seawalls. _ .:• . The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the long services of ftie retiring secretary, Mr. G. R. C. Jackman. ,

Regret was expressed at the' death of Mr. N. G. Key, who was the honorary solicitor for the association, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to his. relatives. • It was pointed out that the surf club and the bowling club had benefited from the carnival by £130, and" not £112 as had been stated.

The following officers were elected: —President, Mr.. B; O'Brien; vicepresidents, Messrs. C. B. McDougall, L. E. Aldridge; and W. Churchill; ■' hon. secretary, Mr. D: Craig; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. G.
