MARCONI RIG
IDLE ALONG YACHTS
LOCAL EXPERIMENT
Wellington yachtsmen who wish to experiment with a Marconi rig on the popular Idle Along class of yacht will be able to do so this season, according to a decision made by a general meeting of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association last night after a full discussion on the subject. It was made clear that the Marconi rig will not be permitted in the-New Zealand Idle Along championship races, but will be allowed in local racing only with a view to testing its suitability io: that particular class of yacht.
It was decided to recommend to the Sanders Cup conference that the sail plan of the Rona class should remain the same, but that the tack of the spinnaker should-be allowed to be carried round the forestay.
Captain W. J. Keane, the association's chairman, announced his intention of retiring from office, and his successor will be decided upon at the next meeting of the executive. The meeting received his intimation with regret and expressed its appreciation of the services rendered to New Zealand yachting by Captain Keane during his four years as chairman. •*
A plea for the maintenance of the Takapuna boat as an intermediate class between the Taurangas and the Idle Alongs was made, by Captain Keane, who pointed out the difference between the boys' Tauranga racing and the experienced sailing of most Idle Along crews. Boys would be encouraged by making the tfakapuna class one for boys under 21, and that would ftlso help to keep the Cornwell Cup contest in existence.
Mr. W. P. Rollings, commodore of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club presented certificates to the Wellington representative crews who participated in last season's racing for the Sanders, Cornwell, Idle Along, and Masport Cups. He presented also the following trophies:—lnter-club Cup won by the Southern Maid, owned and sailed by E. W. Hargreaves; Wellington provincial Idle Along championship, won by the Resolute, owned and sailed by Messrs Tanner and KirkCampbell Cup, for the Wellington provincial X class championship, won by the Lavina, owned by A. Coleman and sailed by A. Johnston; Duncan Cup, for the Wellington provincial Takapuna championship, won by the Marie owned and sailed by H. Davis; Civil Service Cup, for the Wellington provincial monotype championship, won by P. Harlen; Vernon Grove Cup won by the Noleen, owned and sailed by M. Coleman; Tauranga Cup, won by the Imp, owned and sailed by B. Miller
