NEW RIVER DREDGE
The official opening of the New River Gold Dredging Company's dredge at Dunganville, West Coast, took place on August 4, there being an attendance of over a hundred shareholders and others. The dredge was constructed by Andersons, Ltd., of Christchurch, for the company, which has a capital of £24,000. Work was commenced twelve months ago, and the pontoons were launched in November last. The dredge's main power unit is a 140 h.p. Diesel engine of a similar type to that of the Mataki and Worksop dredges. There is bne 12in pump and one Bin pump.
The ground is between 14ft and 15ft deep, and the digging capacity of the dredge with - her close-connected buckets is • estimated at 12,000 cubic yards a week. The dredge is located in a bend in the New River about the middle of the company's three hundred acre claim.
Mr. L. Richards, Christchurch, chairman of directors, referred to the dredge as another link in what, in his opinion, was to be a big industry on the West Coast.
The dredge was set in motion for a short run, everything working satisfactorily.
MATAKI JUNCTION.
The Mataki Junction dredge recovered during the four weeks ended July 30 200oz llgr, the hours operating being 423, and the material handled 69,002 yards.
