A MUSICAL OPPORTUNITY
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—The brilliantly-written and vividly-descriptive article in Monday's "Post" from the pen of Miss Valeric Corliss on the subject of Dr. Malcolm Sargent is a forcible reminder that New Zealand will be visited practically concurrently by "two of the world's foremost musical artists—a rare, if not an unprecedented event in the history of this country. We have certainly never previously been honoured by the presence here at one time of an outstanding pianist and a leading orchestral conductor from overseas. I am alluding to Miss Eileen Joyce and to Dr. Sargent. The latter has arrived in this city and the former will be here on1 August 18.
What a Unique opportunity thus pre-
sents itself of hearing these two magnificent artists in conjunction. Miss Corliss has most eloquently given us a word-picture of what Di\ Sargent can achieve in the exclusive art vi conducting concertos. We shall sea and hear that branch of his genius exposited in collaboration with Mr. Paul Vinogradoff on August 11.
I use the expression "exclusive art" because it is one which Dr. Sargent has made peculiarly his own.
If a further concerto concert, with Miss Eileen Joyce as soloist, could on arranged under this great conductor's baton, I venture to predict it would remain an unforgettable experience to local enthusiasts.
There is a tide in the affairs of music that, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. The occasion now presented is unique in our musical annals and may never recur. May we hops for -an earnest consideration of the matter by the authorities concerned? —I am, etc., ". ■ ■ .
