A blood-coloured trail in tne snow along the back roads of Sumner on Saturday afternoon presented passersby with a mystery suggesting something sinister (states, the "Press"). The dark red stains were' clearly seen all the way from Clifton Spur to the foot ot Evans Pass and right up to the sum-1 mit; Anyone whose curiosity led him to track the mystery down would have found himself completing a iourney of six' miles in the snow, up.to Evans Pass, down towards Taylor's Mistake, and ever Scarborough, only to finish where he began. Had he bntm fast enough ho might have overtaken two packs of cross-country runners, out for an interesting run round the heights, enjoying a magnificent view of the snow-covered Alps and "plains. The trail-layers, finding paper useless in the snow, had used red crystals. A few ounces were enough to make an umnisI takablc path over the full six miles. ■
