SOUTHLAND POWER BOARD

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, August 4.

Notice of its intention to strike a general rate of a halfpenny in the £ on unimproved value was given by the Southland Electric Power Board at its meeting -today. A decision made in committee to hold atreferendum on the Government's taking over under certain conditions of the Southland electric power'scheme was revealed later by remarks made in open meeting.

The decision to give notice of the striking of a rate was qualified by a special order that unreticulated ratepayers pay only a sixth of the rate.

The board at a previous meeting had decided not to strike a rate.

Field grey has been adopted as an alternative colour for Salvation Army uniforms; the material will be lighter in weight as well as in colour, and grey stockings will be worn with it.
