GIRLS' COLLEGE BUSY EARLY ' .*
The Wellington Girls' College vhad all arrangements ready for their "Arbor Day" celebration todayl^ and v these 'proved to be both complete • and. interesting. The girls all, met in;tho ce"ntral hall first for .a suitable, '•programme of entertainment; which was .designed to bring before them the importance of jtlie work done towards beautifying their city. , ; " The song' "Where E'er You W,alk" given by the school choir begait.the proceedings, followed by a reading "Tree Planting!', by Miss Doris fijTnep. Then Mrs. Knox Gilmer gave one c-£ her energetic and alirring addrjesse? urging the importance of not'"only planting, but talcing every care', of trees and shrubs and ferns .of.-' the country. A "recitation followecklhis, "O Dreamy, Gloomy, Friendly Trees," by Alma Dinnie, and a song "Tree?*1 by the school'choir. The singing pf^JGod Save the King" concluded the infioor programme, and then all went out for the ceremonial tree-planting. ' .
A pohutukawa was planted by, Miss Grieg (principal) in memory of Miss D. M. S. Holmes, headmistress • of, Tewkesbury School, who died Recently. Mrs. Urquhart (president of th'e'Old Girls' Association) planted, a number of rose trees which had been donated by Mrs. Knox Gilmer (in memory of the late Mrs. Ena Dawson); and^ther rose trees were planted by members of the staff. ' ' . ' " ( > - A good task was allotted to the'1 prefects, who planted a hedge of berberis, which will be a "thing of beauty?'~*and "a joy for many years." Various forms did some planting also, the whole making a sensible difference to the future ornamentation of j the grounds at> the Pipitea Street college.^ * . v
Mrs. V. G. Webb, wife of the ,M'aruie Superintendent of the' Union Steam Ship Company," will1 return'to' New Zealand by the Awatea on hfer maiden voyage. She'is due topsail from Greenock, on August 5. Commander Webb will be'in London until' September 17, when-he will return to New Zealand by the Kangitikil , t
