WRONG COLOURS

POSSIBLE REASON

GARRARD ELIMINATED

(Received August 4, 11, a.m.)

BERLIN, August 3. The Australian manager (Mr. Alderson) protested concerning the GarrardRomagnoli wrestling bout because the contestants were supplied with anklebands which were the opposite colours to those on the cards given tq ;the referees. Mr. N.'Alderson claims that the referees were thereby .completely confused. Herr Schmidt (president of the International Wrestling Federation) promised to decide tonight whether the protest on behalf of Garrard would be considered. Herr Schmidt admitted that other nations had also complained. Meanwhile the three judges complained against did not officiate today. It is reported that the English, American, and Canadian teams may decline to enter the ring unless the three judges are suspended. Whether or not the protest regarding Garrard's first heat is upheld he'had the right to compete in the second heat in which he was defeated. He has now been eliminated. NO MISTAKE MADE. The representative of the Australian Associated Press, agency reports that there was consternation and some sheepishness in the Australian wrestling camp tonight when Garrard was thrown by Karpati and Romagnoli, whose verdict over Garrard last night was disputed, won another round. * Mi-. Alderson inquired into the prospects of calling a jury of honour to consider the protest, but discreet inquiries indicated that it was bound to fail. It was therefore dropped. Herr Schmidt inspected the judges' records and told Mr. Alderson that they knew Romagnoli well, were never confused, and were unanimous that a decision in favour of the Italian was precisely what they meant to give. Meanwhile, in deference to the Canadian, British, and American complaints it is understood that the three judges concerned will not be called on for bouts in which those nations figure.
