LATE MR,- J. J. RICKETTS

; Today was gloriously fine for the First-Monday-in-August holiday in Nelson. Sports organisations had special programmes and many city people went to the country. The Max Shield .Rugby Match between Town and Country was won by Country by 8 points to^ 6. The women's.six-a-side hockey, tournament was won by Atua (Motueka), who defeated Rewa (Nelson) ;in the final.

. In the early hours of Sunday morn-ing-'an accident occurred on the StokeRichmbnd road outside the aerodrome between a new car driven by Mr. R. Newman, with three passengers, and a lorry driven by Hop Chong, with another Chinaman as passenger. The vehicles met head-on and were badly damaged but the occupants escaped with minor injuries. The death of Mr. J. J. Ricketts, of Port Nelson, at the age of 86, removed one. 'of the best-known, residents of Nelson. The late Mr. .Ricketts was born.iri'lß49 at the locality well known in the early days as Little Scotland, on the banks of The Brook, where the boat Roving Bride was built by his father, Mr. Ambrose Ricketts. The family later moved to Awaroa, where Mr. Ricketts was engaged in the building of the schooner Awaroa. Moving to Torrent Bay! he built the Comet, Dauntless, Wave, and Anatuero, and Transit, Tall well known in the Tasman Bay trade in earlier days. He later transferred "to Kelson and -with his brothers1 established the firm of Ricketts Bros., who. ran.the Wairoa and the Transit.. -Mr. Ricketts was married over 50 years ago to the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Kidsori at "the Nelson Lighthouse', whore Mrs.. Ricketts was born. Of a .family of eleven, six are living— Messrs. Russell and George (Nelson), Charlie (Wellington), Louis"and Ralph (Auckland), and Mrs. Murphy (Nelson) .
