EMPIRE SECRETARIAT
NEED EMPHASISED
MELBOURNE, August 2,
Upon his arrival from London, Mr. R. G. Menzies, Federal AttorneyGeneral, emphasised the need for an Imperial secretariat in order to increase co-operation between the
Dominions.
He pointed out that there was no Dominion view on larger problems. "I was, frequently asked what the Dominion view was on a certain matter," he said. "Frankly I had to admit I did not know. The Australian, Canadian, South African, and New Zealand views are likely to be divergent, and even Australia's is difficult to ascertain. It is increasingly clear that there is need for Imperial consultation before great decisions are made, and not after. This is a matter that will have to be grappled with at the next Imperial Conference."
