REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

HAWKE'S BAY DEFEATED

JRANFURLY SHIELD RETAINED

Saturday's representative Rugby in New..Zealand was of a more general nature than previously this season, and though the weather throughout the country, affected grounds and attendances some excellent performances were given. At Wellington, the strong Hawke's Bay team was decisively defeated by 25 points to nil, the superiority of the Wellington pfack assisting in the victory. Faced by one of the strongest invasions of Rugby history in the South Island, Otago proved too strong for Southland, retaining possession of the Ranfurly Shield by- 16 points to 3 on a ground from which snow was swept in the morning. Taranaki had little difficulty with the visiting Wairarapa side, running out victors by 37 points to 16. .

Wellington was also engaged in a junior. fixture, the representatives drawing with Manawatu at Palmerston North with a score of 16 all. Otago's junior reps, were less successful than the seniors, and the team drew with the Southland juniors, each side scoring 8 points.-

The Auckland-Canterbury fixture, set down for playing at Ghristcliurch, was not played, the. execrable conditions preventing the match from being played. Auckland will journey on to Otago and Southland this week and will play Canterbury today week on their return. .
