MANTLE IN CANTERBURY
UNFORTUNATE SATURDAY
(By TeleErap"h.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The first snowstorm of the winter swept Canterbury during the night. Nearly three inches lay on the ground in the city this morning, and all the country districts report similar falls. Road traffic generally was delayed* but there has been no interference to telegraph, telephone, or power lines.
The Christchurch Hunt Club's races had to be abandoned, causing grave disappointment to owners and trainers, as the meeting was regarded as a preliminary to the Grand National events.
The Canterbury versus Auckland representative Rugby match has been postponed till Monday, August 10, which is a non-racing day in National Week.
All the Association football matches have been postponed, but the England versus South Island League Rugby match will be played after the Show Grounds have been cleared with a motor snow-plough.
The Christchurch Hunt Club had insured against rain, but failed to collect the insurance as, although snow fell, only 9 points of rain was registered in i the vital period—between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. To receive the insurance money It is necessary for 10 points of rain to be registered in the hours specified.
