EWES IN DEMAND

The Bank of New Zealand, produce ] department, has received the following ' advice from its London office as at close of business this week: —The market for wethers is q; .;iet ana unchanged. Smaller supplies of ewes have caused prices to harden. There is a moderate demand for lambs. There is a good demand for beef. Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, July 31, giving North Island frozen meat quotations as follows: — Down lambs, 28-361b 7 3-8 d per lb, 36----42 63d; crossbred lambs, 28-36 7d, 36----48, 63d; second quality lambs, average 130-31, 6id; wethers, under 481b, 5 l-Bd, 48-56 4 3-Bd, 56-64 4 l-Bd, 64-72 4d- ewes, under 48 4Jd, 48-56 3Jd, 56-64 3Jd, 64----72 3Jd; New Zealand prime ox beef, 160-220, 3 l-Bd. Compared with last week's quotations crossbred lamb 28----361b and second quality lamb l-8d per lb lower; wethers under 481b l-8d per lb ■ higher; ewes, 48-721b, l-8d per lb higher; beef, l-8d per lb lower. The lamb market on the spot is weaker, | particularly for light weights. The mutton market is steady.
