TEACHING SAFETY

COMPULSORY SCHOOL COURSE

The State of Michigan, U.S.A., is introducing into its public schools curriculum a programme of study in road safety.

The course prepared provides for compulsory instruction in traffic rules, regulations, and problems. It will be used in high schools, principally _to prepare youths who soon will be seeking drivers' licences. It will be limited to academic activities and will not involve actual driving,of cars. The high school safety course will be included in the State course of school studies.

Whenever possible, safety education will be integrated into the other studies. English students, for example, could write essays on safety, and physics students could measure the force needed to stop or change-the direction of a moving object. A general safety course will be taught in the elementary schools through the co-operation of teachers and by use of a State bulletin on ways to avoid traffic mishaps.
