GAOL INSTEAD OF PROBATION

CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. Because at his trial on a charge of indecent assault'he went into the wit-ness-box and denied the circumstances alleged against him, Leonard Keith Aldridge sacrified his chance of being admitted to probation, and was sentenced by his Honour Mr. Justice Northcroft to three months' imprisonment with hard labour.

"Had it not been for, the manner in which you presented your defence," said his Honour to the "I might have extended to you the benefits of probation, though it would have been an extreme case.! However, the jury held, and rightly, that you added perjury to your offence." '' ;
